Writing Citable Definitions: Why AI Engines Quote Some Pages and Not Others
Extractability is the degree to which a piece of writing can be lifted out of its surrounding context and still make complete sense. AI engines that cite sources are, mechanically, doing extraction — pulling a sentence or two out of a much longer page and presenting it as a quoted or paraphrased answer. Pages that are easy to extract from get quoted. Pages that require surrounding context to make sense get paraphrased poorly, summarized vaguely, or skipped for a competitor's clearer page.
Why this affects AI citations
When a retrieval-augmented engine has fetched a candidate page and needs to produce an answer, it isn't reading the whole page into the response — it's finding the passage that most directly answers the query and using that. The passage most likely to get selected is the one that already reads like an answer: a self-contained claim with the subject named, not a fragment that only makes sense in the middle of a longer argument.
A crisp definition near the top of a page is the single most quotable unit of content you can write, because it does the extraction work in advance. Instead of the engine having to identify which sentence, out of many, would still make sense standalone, you've already written the standalone sentence. That's a lower-effort, higher-confidence extraction target than anything buried in paragraph six.
The anatomy of a citable definition
A citable definition has three properties, and losing any one of them breaks it.
The subject is named explicitly. Not "it," not "this approach," not a pronoun referring back three sentences — the actual noun. "A meta description is..." not "This is a way to...". An engine extracting a sentence with a dangling pronoun has to also carry the antecedent, which usually means the sentence can't be lifted cleanly at all.
It's written in present tense, stating what something is. "X is Y" as a structure works because it makes a timeless, general claim rather than a narrated event. "We decided to define X as Y" or "X was originally created to be Y" are both about the history of a definition, not the definition itself, and they read as more contingent and less authoritative when extracted alone.
It survives being lifted out of context. Read the sentence by itself, with nothing before or after it. If it still fully makes sense — no unresolved "as mentioned above," no reference to an example three paragraphs earlier — it's extractable. If you have to add anything to make it comprehensible standalone, it isn't.

Why a story-intro opening kills quotability
A common instinct in web writing is to open with a hook — an anecdote, a scenario, a rhetorical question — and delay the actual definition until the reader is "warmed up." This is a reasonable technique for human engagement in long-form writing meant to be read start to finish. It's close to actively hostile to extraction.
Consider an opening like: "Imagine you've just published a guide and you're waiting to see if anyone finds it. That moment of uncertainty is exactly why understanding citable content matters so much today." The actual definition, if it ever arrives, is now two or three sentences deep, and everything before it is narrative scaffolding that an extraction system has no use for. Worse, if the engine does try to extract from this opening, the best it can pull is the vague scaffolding sentence, not the substantive claim — because the substantive claim hasn't appeared yet.
Does this mean I can never open with a hook?
You can, but the definition still needs to appear within the first sentence or two regardless — put the hook after it, not before. Extend the pattern to every section
The same logic that applies to your opening paragraph applies at every H2 boundary. Each section heading sets up an implicit question, and the paragraph beneath it should open with a sentence that directly answers that question before it moves into supporting detail, caveats, or examples.
This matters because engines don't only extract from the top of a page — a well-structured document gives them multiple candidate passages to pull from, one per section, each independently quotable. How to check
Read your opening paragraph in isolation, with the rest of the page hidden. Does the first sentence name its subject and state what it is, in present tense, with nothing before it required to understand it? Then do the same check at each H2 — cover everything below the heading except the first sentence of the first paragraph, and ask whether that sentence alone answers the question the heading implies.

Find your page's actual first sentence today. If it's a hook, a question, or a scene-setter, identify the real definition buried somewhere below it — nearly every page that lacks a citable opening still has the actual definition written down somewhere, just not at the top. Move it, or rewrite it, to be the first sentence: name the subject, state what it is, present tense, nothing assumed.
Then work down through your H2 sections doing the same check. You don't need to rewrite everything into a dry list of definitions — hooks, examples, and narrative have real value for a reader who's already committed to your page. The fix is ordering: definition first, color after, every time, so that whichever sentence an extraction system reaches first is one that can stand entirely on its own.
